What is Acne?

Before starting any skincare routine, testing products, or spending excessive amounts of money at the drug store, it is essential that you understand what acne really is, the process of its occurrence, and particularly what type of skin you have. Knowledge is power people! The more informed you are about skincare, the better chance you have of picking the products that fit your needs and maintaining a healthy glow, both temporarily and in the long run. There are many misconceptions when it comes to breakouts, blackheads, and acne, so our main goal at GR8SKN is to educate our customers and make them skintelligent!

The most important concept to understand about acne is that it is hormonal, which means you cannot necessarily prevent it from appearing. Hormones are simply unavoidable, especially in your teenage years. However, you certainly have the power to manage breakouts and prevent complications like scarring, infections and pigmentation. If you do not have acne prone skin it’s still necessary that you find a skincare routine that best suits you because you will be exposed to other skin problems as you age, such as dryness, wrinkles and sun damage.

Although acne is a common problem for both males and females, boys generally tend to have more severe and longer lasting acne than girls. Just when the females think they’ve made it past the awkward stage, the breakouts start to hit them in their 20s and 30s. Having bad skin may have a negative physical and mental effect on teens and young adults. It can cause people to be very self-conscious and avoid social situations, which is why it’s beneficial to get into good habits at a young age. Here are some key tips from our GR8SKN experts!

  1. Develop a manageable routine that fits your skin. Everyone's skin reacts differently to products. Do your research and talk to professionals to find out what type of skin you have! You can narrow down your search and pick the product that will be most effective for you!

  2. Be Patient! If you have just started a new product, be patient with it. It takes about 6 weeks to see results, so even if you’re not happy with it at first, don’t give up too soon!

  3. Watch what you eat! What your skin looks like is a reflection of your diet. Here at GR8SKN we say, “Your skin is what you eat.” You should avoid sugars and sodas, take a fish oil or Omega 3 supplement, and drink plenty of water!

  4. Incorporate Vitamins A and C in your diet! Vitamins A and C are essential for attaining beautiful skin! Vitamin A slows the aging process and improves hyperpigmentation while Vitamin C is a powerful anti-oxidant that prevents cellular damage.

  5. Exercise Daily! Some may think that sweating will worsen acne, when in fact it helps it, as long as you are taking the proper steps before and after working out! This includes washing and applying a good moisturizer.

  6. Keep it Simple! Sometimes people think the more the better, but not in this case! Harsh scrubs, washes, over exfoliating, and popping pimples will actually cause more damage to the skin.

  7. Moisturize! A lot of teenagers and young adults avoid moisturizing their face because it makes their skin feel greasy. However, it supports the barrier function of the skin, which helps prevent the redness associated with acne!

  8. Get a Good Night’s Sleep! When you’re sleep-deprived, your body creates more stress and hormones, which then causes acne. Not getting enough sleep can also quicken the aging process.
